Hiking in the Betancuria Rural Park – Fuerteventura’s wild side
No sun lounger. No resort. No crowds. Those who truly understand what Fuerteventura is hike into the interior – down into the gorges, up to the summits, away from everyday life. The Betancuria Rural Park is exactly that: raw, unspoilt, breathtaking. And yet barely visited.
Welcome to one of the best hiking areas in the Canary Islands.

More than an island – the Parque Rural Betancuria
Over 16,500 hectares of protected land. One municipality. Countless reasons to visit.
The Betancuria Natural Park stretches through the municipality of Betancuria and Las Peñitas – where the island’s basal complex meets ancient lava flows. The result is a landscape that looks as though it was deliberately crafted to be dramatic. Deep barrancos, gentle hillside ridges, rugged cliff faces – all at once.
And in the midst of it all: life. Rare plant species, many of them endemic or protected. Rock-dwelling plants. Introduced species such as Nicotiana glauca. And the Pinar de Betancuria – the only pine forest on the entire island, fragrant with resin and reminiscent of places that could be miles away.

Wildlife that nobody expects
Lizards dart across lava boulders. Birds circle above the ridge. Those who walk quietly will see more here than anywhere else on Fuerteventura.
The rural park is a genuine birdwatching hotspot in the Canary Islands – and a quiet retreat for all those who seek nature not as a backdrop, but as a real experience.

The mountains that tower above everything
Three names worth knowing: Morro Velosa (669 m), Morro de la Cruz (676 m), Gran Montaña (703 m). The latter is the second-highest peak in the central massif and one of the five highest summits on the island.
From the viewpoint near Morro Velosa, a panorama unfolds that leaves you speechless. Hills, gorges, light – and not a single parasol in sight.
