Faro de la Entallada – Where Fuerteventura’s cliffs meet the light
On the south-east coast of Fuerteventura, around seven kilometres east of Las Playitas, a lighthouse has stood silent sentinel over the sea for decades. The Faro de la Entallada stands where the land drops sheer into the blue of the Atlantic – on a wild, deserted cliff-top that you won’t forget in a hurry.
The island’s newest lighthouse
Among the lighthouses of Fuerteventura, the Faro de la Entallada is the newest structure: built only in the 1950s, it is a relatively recent addition to the island’s history. Yet what it lacks in age, it more than makes up for in character.
The building’s floor plan is square, flanked on either side by two annexes, which lend the complex a symmetrical, almost fortress-like appearance. But what really captivates the eye is the masonry: against the white-grouted stone, grey basalt and red porphyry stand out – a play of colours that looks as though it were blended by the island itself. The structure is crowned by an elegant glass dome, which glows like a silent flame when backlit by the evening sun.
A very special vantage point
Even though the building is not currently open to the public, the trip to the Faro de la Entallada is well worth it. For what the surroundings have to offer far outweighs any admission fee: the view sweeps across a dramatic stretch of Fuerteventura’s cliff coast, unspoilt and almost archaic. On clear days, the panorama stretches far into Jandía in the south – a horizon without boundaries.
The interplay between the tower, the basalt cliffs and the endless Atlantic makes this one of the most impressive viewpoints on Fuerteventura off the beaten track.
Note: Wind and open spaces
Anyone visiting the Faro de la Entallada should know: this stretch of coastline is famous for its strong winds. Make sure to secure your belongings – hats, bags, camera equipment. The wind is part of the experience here; it is part of the atmosphere, but it means business.
How to get to the Faro de la Entallada
The journey to the lighthouse is a little adventure in itself. From Puerto del Rosario, follow the FV-2 southwards, past the airport, until you turn off at Tequital onto a side road heading towards the coast. The final stretch is winding and challenging – a road trip that demands concentration but rewards you with breathtaking views.
