A Village Between Silence and Farming
In the south of Fuerteventura, on the southern edge of the Caldera de Gairía, lies the small village of Tiscamanita. Fewer than 500 souls inhabit this cluster of old stone houses, many of which have long stood empty. And yet: anyone who looks more closely will see that work is still being done here – intensive, down-to-earth, hands in the soil.
Grain grows in the deep-cut barrancos. Black volcanic grit – known in Spanish as enarenado – covers the fields like a dark blanket. This ancient dry-farming method retains moisture in the parched earth and makes agriculture possible where nothing should really grow.
The Aloe Vera Farm – a Living Field in the Heart of Fuerteventura
This is precisely the principle behind Aloe Vera Exclusive Tiscamanita – one of the best-known aloe vera farms on Fuerteventura, situated right on the main FV-2 road. Stretching out in every direction around the building are endless fields of ruler-straight rows of Aloe Barbadensis Miller – the variety native to East and Southern Africa that has become Fuerteventura’s most important cultivated plant.
Long irrigation hoses wind their way along the plants. Each aloe grows for five years before reaching its optimum maturity – that is, its highest concentration of active compounds. Only then is it time for the harvest.
Tour & Visit: A Look Inside Aloe Production
Visitors can join a free guided tour of the Tiscamanita aloe farm. Groups are led around the extensive grounds, past production halls with large tanks where the gel is further processed.
The harvest itself is done by hand: leaves are cut off one by one, the lower end sliced open – and the bitter active compound aloin drips out, timed precisely. The leaves are then washed, peeled, and the gel-like interior whipped in containers. After cooling and filtration, the result is a pure, natural gel – free of plant fibres, ready for further processing.
Aloe Vera: A Medicinal Plant with an Impressive Active Compound Profile
The Aloe Vera Barbadensis Miller is no ordinary plant. It contains 13 vitamins, 16 enzymes, 13 minerals and 21 amino acids – a spectrum valued equally in naturopathy and aloe cosmetics. Around 300 known aloe species exist worldwide; this one is considered the richest in active compounds.
Its skin-soothing and vitalising properties make it a natural remedy for sunburn, psoriasis and digestive complaints. Little wonder that the cosmetics industry has long staked its claim on the Canary Islands’ liquid gold.

After the tour, the on-site shop awaits – a place where it is hard to resist the charm of Fuerteventura aloe vera products. Gels, creams, juices: all directly from the producer. Purchasing is of course entirely voluntary, but holding something genuine in your hands – something you just saw growing in the field – has its own particular appeal.
