Mirador de Barlovento – Where Fuerteventura Is at Its Wildest
Those who leave the tame tourist beaches behind and venture deeper into the Naturpark Jandía will eventually discover a world that seems to have fallen out of time. At around 220 metres above sea level, at the far western tip of the Jandía Peninsula, the Mirador de Barlovento rises up – a viewpoint that needs no grand words. Here, the landscape speaks for itself.
A Panorama That Leaves You Speechless
The view that unfolds from up here is of rare breadth. Around 10 kilometres of wild coastline stretch down below – flanked by the deserted beaches of Playa de Cofete and Playa de Barlovento. No sunshade, no sun lounger. Just black cliffs, white foam, and the dull thunder of Atlantic waves breaking relentlessly against the shore.
You don’t need to stand here long to understand: these coves are tailor-made for solitary walks – for all those who seek unspoilt nature on Fuerteventura and want to escape everyday life for good.
Between Sea and Mountains
The panorama is framed by the Macizo de Jandía, the mighty mountain massif that forms the rugged backbone of the peninsula. Clouds sometimes gather against the steeply rising rock faces, lending the scene a dramatic quality. On clear days, the gaze travels all the way up to Pico de la Zarza – at 807 metres the island’s highest peak and a silent witness above it all.
The interplay of sea, surf, and mountain scenery makes the Mirador Barlovento Fuerteventura one of the most impressive viewpoints on Fuerteventura – and one of the least crowded.
Getting to the Mirador de Barlovento
The drive there is itself an experience. From Morro Jable, you follow a minor road heading north-west – through a barren, almost lunar-looking landscape that grows ever more sparse and silent. At the fork in the road, turn right, and after a few more kilometres it appears on the left: the Mirador de Barlovento viewpoint, modestly signposted, but of incomparable effect.
Anyone who wants to experience Fuerteventura off the beaten track should not miss this place. It is not an Instagram hotspot. It is something rarer: a place that stays with you.
