Faro de el Tostón – Where Fuerteventura Meets the Edge of the World
At the north-western tip of the island, north of El Cotillo, the road comes to an end – and the silence begins. Here, at the north-western tip of Fuerteventura, stands the Faro de el Tostón: a lighthouse that is more than a navigational marker. It is a quiet witness to time.
Three Towers, One Story
What makes this lighthouse on Fuerteventura so extraordinary is its unique ensemble of three towers, each representing a different era. Around 1887, a ground-level, red-painted keeper’s house was built with a small attached historic lighthouse – modest, but effective. It served its purpose well into the 1950s.
Then came its successor: an octagonal, white tower, approximately 15 metres tall, rising into the Atlantic sky like an oversized chess piece – or rather, it once did. Today only its base remains, a quiet torso amidst the complex.
The Modern Lighthouse: Red-and-White Striped and Unmistakable
Since 1986, the 30-metre-tall, red-and-white striped lighthouse has taken on the task of guiding ships safely along the coast. This active lighthouse on Fuerteventura is visible from afar and dominates the sparse landscape with a powerful presence.
The grounds around the Faro de el Tostón are freely accessible. Climbing the tower is not possible, however – one remains an observer. And that is more than enough.
Panorama, Surf and the Feeling of Vastness
Anyone who has once stood on the north-western coast of Fuerteventura will never forget the view. The sea around El Tostón reveals its rugged side – waves breaking against the black coastline with impressive force, a horizon without end, the Atlantic in its primal power.

Getting There: How to Reach the Faro de el Tostón
From Puerto del Rosario, follow the FV-10 northwards via La Oliva to El Cotillo. From there, a narrowing road leads directly to the north-western tip of the island. The Faro de el Tostón lighthouse can already be spotted from a distance – a red-and-white stripe at the edge of the world.
