Anyone wanting to visit Playa de Garcey beach should know: it does not give itself up easily. Between La Pared and Ajuy, an unsurfaced gravel track branches off from the coastal route – uneven, dusty, in places barely more than a trail through the scree. Ideally, you travel with a four-wheel-drive vehicle, as ordinary hire cars quickly reach their limits here.
The Playas de Sotavento stretch for 5 kilometres along the south-east coast of the Jandía Peninsula – one of the most breathtaking coastal landscapes in the entire Canary Islands. The name ‘Sotavento’ means ‘leeward side’ in Spanish, and indeed this beach on Fuerteventura sits in a natural sheltered position that gives it its unmistakable character.
When people think of beaches, they picture golden sand, sun loungers, parasols. Pozo Negro shatters that image – and replaces it with something more real. The bay, roughly 300 metres long and 12 metres wide, sits right next to the small fishing village of the same name, roughly halfway between Caleta de Fuste and Gran Tarajal. What makes the Caletillas de Cotillo so special is their geological history. Cooled lava flows have divided Fuerteventura's coastline into individual segments – natural lagoons formed by solidified rock that channel the Atlantic's waves into calmer currents. There are places on Fuerteventura that elude the passing glance. Places reached by no broad tarmac road, beckoned by no hotel complex, tempted by no souvenir stand. Playas de la Pared are among those places. On the southern west coast of the island, close to Fuerteventura's narrowest point – the Istmo de la Pared – a coastline opens up that is raw, unspoilt, and of breathtaking stillness.
There are places you never forget. Flag Beach on Fuerteventura – officially known as Playa del Viejo – is one of them.
